b.1993 Darlinghurst, Sydney
Kate Waddington is an emerging artist whose practice is defined by a love of Sydney and a desire to capture its vibrant atmosphere by the Harbour. Kate loves to explore colour and form through abstraction and impressionist style brush work. She loves to be surprised by colour and how it pops off the canvas, capturing your entire focus. Coming from an architectural background her fondness of the iconic structures of Sydney have stood out to her for many years. The deep blue waters of the harbour, the movement of boats and the colourful homes that surround the shoreline is an endless source of visual inspiration.
Drawing was the first step to creating an architectural building, a practice which Kate has adapted into her career as an artist to plan a painting. This drawing method involving crayon and ink pen has now become an intrigal part of her creative process and body of work, allowing ideas to flow from pen to paper. Her sketches tell a story of the scenes she intends to paint, capturing the cheeky Australian cockatoos, cute ferries, iconic forms of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge and the curvature of the harbour.
Kate often listens to Jazz music in her studio and her Cavalier King Charles Spaniel ‘Lady’ by her side is a constant comfort. Often her best works come from moments of colour play with acrylic paint and having fun with the stunning forms of Sydney.
